Photography and digital art

If you are looking for a story, be my guest. I did not put one there, but you may find one. That is what humans do, make stories. Stories bond us, entertain us. Stories take the unfamiliar and weave it in to the fabric of our understanding, so making strange things seem comfortable.
And this is where art comes in; to offend. To unbalance, to disturb, to provoke. Because another thing that humans do is invent. And they do that best when they are off balance. That is what running is; constantly putting a foot forward to stop yourself falling. And so you move in to new places and see the world from a different viewpoint.

I have been involved in the arts all my life. I was born and grew up in South Devon, England, where I developed a strong interest in music, performing with poets and street theatre. As a young man I moved to London, quickly becoming involved in experimental music. After a dozen years of performing and recording I moved north, touring with theatre and dance companies, making theatre props as well as performing. I settled on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, Lancashire, teaching saxophone and arranging sea shanties, folk melodies and early music for saxophone quartet. Shortly after returning to Devon at the turn of the century, an interest in photography became an obsession. In photography, as in music, I am always on the look out for the new, the unexpected; to set up expectations and to confound them.

One of the big advantages of working in the arts is that we earn very little money. To make ends meet, I have done all sorts of jobs: Father Christmas and circus clown, research technician and cheese maker. Along with teaching, this means that I have met all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures. Life is very interesting if we allow it to be. It shapes what I am and what I create.

The Arts Trail is a series of exhibitions organised by the South Hams Arts Forum. The venue for my exhibition is Upstairs at Avon Mill Garden Centre. In 2019 I am sharing the exhibition with another photographer, Rod Birtles.
